Carol Vernallis analysed both music video and Hollywood film. She identified distinct approaches such as narrative (structure) and representation. She has focused on how the music video can have a montage of different clips and still make sense because it has a huge help with the auditory material involved whereas a Hollywood film has to use continuity to order their shots as nothing would make sense and everyone in the audience would be highly confused.
"In video our attention to the song shapes the way we perceive the image, but to an equal extent what we attend to in the image helps determine how we hear the music". In this quote Carol Vernallis is stating that in the music video the moving images that the audience and viewers see help us to understand the songs and the lyrics involved and vice versa, the lyrics and the songs also help us to understand the moving image in the frame, this is the link between the visual and auditory material.
Shots of the artists will encourage our brain to piece together a phantasmagorical body. (A body made up in our mind of all the body shots we see).
